Coolsculpting is a technique that cools fat deposits down to the point that the fat cells die and the fat is naturally removed by the body. The advantages of the Coolsculpting technique are:
Coolsculpting is not for everyone, but 96% of appropriately-selected patients (those with visible fat bulges,) see results, with an average fat reduction of 20% in treated areas (individual results may vary).
The Coolsculpting machine utilizes an applicator that is placed on the bulge that is to be treated. The applicator pulls the fat bulge between its panels, and then precisely cools the tissue. The goal is Cryolipolysis: the destruction of fat cells with cold. Scientific studies have shown that fat cells are more susceptible to destruction by cold than the other cells around them. To take advantage of this, the Coolsculpting device is designed to reduce the temperature in the fat bulge to the point that fat tissues are subtly damaged, but the rest of your tissues, including your skin, blood vessels, and nerves, are not affected.
A person’s number of fat cells and their location is fixed and doesn’t change from early in life. Once fat cells are reduced, when a bulge is treated–whether by liposuction or by Zeltiq–the results are truly lasting.
Coolsculpting is recommended to treat bulges in the:
The procedure doesn’t take very long, about 1 hour per area being treated. Then you go about your normal business, you don’t have to change your routine at all. Over the next couple months, the affected fat cells in the treated area are removed by the body’s normal processes. According to clinical studies, most patients saw some level of results, and, on average, patients saw a reduction of 22% in treated areas.

On September 8, 2010, Coolsculpting was FDA-cleared as safe for use in reducing fat deposits. However, the system was approved over a year earlier for cooling skin and other tissues to reduce damage and discomfort during laser and other dermatologic procedures. The Coolsculpting system is based on technology that has been FDA-approved and in use since at least 1990, and a number of studies have been conducted to ensure that the procedure:
And of course you avoid any of the potential complications of surgery, plus you have no downtime, no scars, and you see visible results.

Unlike some of the other recent advances in fat-removal technology, such as SmartLipo and VASER, Coolsculpting is not a new form of liposuction. It is a nonsurgical alternative to liposuction, but it is also not a replacement. Coolsculpting has several limitations:
If you are looking to get rid of fat in the neck or calves, Coolsculpting is not a good option. People who are looking to remove a lot of fat at one time will probably want liposuction. And if you have a significant amount of excess skin, you will want to consider a body lifting procedure, such as a tummy tuck, that can get rid of skin as well as fat.
Coolsculpting is a revolutionary new technology, but it is still only a tool–not a substitute for the judgment and skill of a board-certified plastic surgeon. Someone who does not know better may recommend Coolsculpting when it will not give you the results you want.
